The Powder Puff philanthropy created a successful and exciting event for those involved. The initial goal of raising $25, 000 was reached. The Charities benefitting from this are Feed the Hunger and Love for Life. Overseer Tyler Samuels commented on the events success “Reaching our goal was our main concern when we first began. But after seeing the excitement from the different sororities I am sure that this will become an annual event.”
Many facets of raising money were included. Long-sleeve shirts were sold for $20, which proved to be a good idea considering multiple orders had to be placed to meet demands. Wristbands for the BBQ dinner included some free drinks at the Levee were also sold, as well as game day tickets. “For the first year this event went surprisingly smoothly”, states Pike Alumni Tyler Samuels.
On the Friday before the game the BBQ dinner hosted a boys dance competition as well as a vote for the Powder Puff Queen. The guys were instructing by the girls to perform a dance routine on stage. Each sorority was designated eight willing dancers. After each team was given the chance to get their groove on the winner was chosen. The crowd was to choose the winner using a “noise-o-meter” based on who got the loudest cheers. Pi Beta Phi was victorious in this event, gaining points in the overall tournament.
Also on that night the Powder Puff queen was chosen. Each sorority nominated a girl they thought worthy of being their queen. Each nominee dressed in their finest was interviewed on stage by the evening’s hosts, Michael Jolly and Michael Templeton. The girls were asked why they think they should be queen and many gave humorous responses. The girls were given their opportunity to say their piece but in the end it came down to the crowd’s vote. Senior, KD Taylor Madison was chosen as the Powder Puff queen.
Saturday, February 19 was game day and the excitement was evident. Girls adorned in their sororities colors and letters began to mentally prepare for the biggest football game of the year: a single-elimination powder puff showdown in which Tri-Delta came out victorious. Coach of the winning team, sophomore, Pike Jackson Jarboe said the hardest part about coaching the girls was the back and forth talking that seemed persistent within the team. It was hard to get them to focus. When I asked him about the girls being nervous playing on Vaught-Hemingway he said they were a little nervous at first but as the game got closer the nervousness turned into excitement.
The success of this event has hopefully created a new tradition of philanthropy that includes a large portion of the Greek system on campus. Pike chose to include every sorority on campus to create a competitive drive. The event proved time worthy as it rose over $25, 000. In future years more experience should bring even more involvement, thus more money to give to charity.
