Schools out for the summer! As the much-anticipated date of May 13 approaches students ready themselves for their second lives, the summer life. Many students have made their plans to work, take classes, do nothing, or all of the above. For some students who choose to stay in Oxford they will realize that Oxford is a much different place in the summertime.
The hunt for summer jobs is a journey that began many months ago for some students. The competition is fierce and the jobs are scarce so relying on recommendations is a must for students such as Craig Joseph. A link to an interview with Craig can be found at the bottom of the post. “I got lucky and spoke to the manager of OUC, who I worked for last summer and got set up with a summer job working there again as a server,” says soon to be Junior, Craig Joseph. Other students haven’t been so lucky and are still searching for a way to support their plans over the summer.
Students sitting on the latter half of their college career find themselves scrambling for internships. They are hoping to gain experience for their future jobs, not to mention the great recommendations that arise from such opportunities. Many interns responsibilities consist of doing the dirty work that more experienced employees don’t necessarily want to do. Despite the dirty work, interns are willing to do whatever it takes to get that letter of recommendation.
Other students are taking the time off of school to clear their minds and spend time with family. Schooling year round can be stressful and time consuming so this time off can be very crucial for their success. “I’ve been taking classes every intersession for two years now and I am so looking forward to moving back to North Carolina to live with my parents for the summer,” says sophomore Ryan O’Connor.
The scholars that choose to take classes during the summer are looking to either catch up on credits or get ahead of the pack. Summer classes are a great opportunity to knock out some of the more difficult classes. A lighter course load allows students to focus more consciously on one or two classes pertaining to their major. Other students are simply retaking classes to boost their grade point average.
Whether students are schooling, working, or relaxing the anticipation of summer has been in their minds for the past few months. The summertime allows students opportunities to experience new things, get ahead in school, and make good money. The only question students have to ask about summertime is this: why can’t it be summertime all year long?
